I. Theotokas -A.A. Pallis – M. Lekakou, Shipping, Ports and Cities in Soviet and post-Soviet period. Reintegration in the global economy, Black Sea History Project Working Papers, volume 9, forthcoming

The advent of containerization has changed the transportation of goods around the globe. Associated with sharp fall in transportation costs, efficiency in cargo handling, integration in transport chains and economies of scale, containers continue to grow both in absolute terms and as a proportion of the global seaborne trade. As seaborne trade expands, this trend sustains with even traditional dry bulk cargoes transported in ‘boxes’. Foremost, containerisation has changed the maritime world, shipping and port industries with sweeping economic consequences for all economies and particularly for those linked with major commercial ports.
